Hwarang: A Brief Introduction

EONNI

This explains nothing.

The set-up

In the pre-Joseon Kingdom Of Silla, the young king lives in hiding while his mother runs the show. In order to secure the loyalty of some restless nobles, the queen regnant decides to recruit their sons (specifying that they must be 'good looking' because why not) to form the new king's guard: the Hwarang. Meanwhile, a mysterious young man of dubious origins finds his way into the city.

What's actually going on here

A show that is joyfully, chaotically loopy. From the bizarre anachronisms to the three-episode arc around a dance routine, this show has everything.

Why you should watch Hwarang

  1. It’s a journey through time and space. The anachronisms in this version of 6th century Korea are less “A Knight’s Tale” and more parallel universe. The net result is a suspension of disbelief so potent that it makes the show incredibly likeable.

  2. Trope paradise. Prince in disguise, love triangle, frenemies, long-lost sons. K-Drama bingo at its finest.

  3. Because gay. Drama about attractive young men forming a brotherhood? The fanfiction writes itself. Stay tuned for gratuitous shower scenes!

  4. Eye candy. The entire premise of the show is ‘hot boys’ and they do not disappoint.

What happened next

Originally airing in 2016-2017, it bombed.
